Consultant Solicitor – Frequently Asked Questions

Numerous solicitors have discussed the possibility of consulting over the years. When a solicitor considers consulting, the benefits are readily apparent: complete flexibility, the ability to choose where they work, how many hours they wish to work, and the liberty to work with whomever they choose. Within the working day, it becomes possible to spend more time with family or to pursue personal interests.

However, the conversations inevitably lead to inquiries regarding the perceived disadvantages of becoming a consultant solicitor. In this article, we have attempted to respond honestly to some of the most frequently asked questions.

Where will my customers come from?

Customers are notoriously loyal to their solicitors. If you are a competent solicitor with a large clientele, your clients will frequently follow you when you relocate. We must emphasise, however, that you must adhere to any restrictive covenants in your previous employment contract.

However, relying solely on your current clientele may not be sufficient. Building your networks and relationships will require tapping into your entrepreneurial spirit, as well as marketing (more on that later).

However, if you are prepared to pursue a career as a consultant, your ambition and drive will naturally be focused on networking.

What type of assistance will I receive?

We handle professional liability insurance, compliance management, and training needs. Our back office support will provide you with all the necessary resources to get started. Full training is provided to familiarise users with our extremely user-friendly case management system. We handle your billing and credit control, and we pay our consultants on a weekly basis based on fees received.

We have regular one-on-one meetings with all consultants and quarterly meetings with them. There is always someone available to answer questions, discuss concerns, and exchange ideas for best practices.

We encourage our consultants to refer business to one another, which not only earns them a referral fee but also enables them to offer a broader range of services outside their area of expertise.

What about marketing and promotion?

Our marketing team is designed to help our consultant solicitors get off to a quick start. We provide comprehensive marketing and business development support from day one of your consulting career with Tann Law Solicitors. Our marketing support consists of the following, but it is not limited to:

  • Greeting cards and other marketing materials
  • Website profiles, a specialised section for the services you provide, and testimonials.

  • Training in social media, including LinkedIn profiles and network building
  • Article writing and support for blogs
  • Campaign development and implementation for your legal speciality.
  • Event and networking schedules and suggestions
  • Promotion of your expertise via our social media channels
  • Client satisfaction questionnaires
  • Award entry assistance

If consulting is something that interests you, we would be delighted to hear from you.
